Build an AI Dashboard From One Business Question
You do not need a data team to get a useful chart. This walkthrough shows how to build an AI dashboard from one question, and how to check the numbers before anyone relies on them.
Leaders often know the question but not where the answer lives. Which customers bring the most margin? Where is time going on jobs?
AI tools can now read a spreadsheet, answer in plain words and draw the chart. The checking is still your job.
Step 1
Start With One Question
Write the decision you are trying to make, then the question that informs it. One question per dashboard to start.
Step 2
Prepare a Clean Spreadsheet
One table, one row per record, clear column names, no merged cells. Strip out names and personal details the question does not need.
Step 3
Ask for the Analysis and the Chart
Upload the file to ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot in Excel or Gemini in Sheets.
Here is my data: [ATTACH] My question: [QUESTION] The decision it informs: [DECISION] 1. Describe the columns and any data quality problems you see 2. Answer the question with the numbers, showing your method in plain words 3. Make one clear chart and one summary table 4. List three follow up questions this data could answer Do not drop rows without telling me how many and why.
Step 4
Check the Numbers Behind the Chart
Pick two figures and check them by hand in the spreadsheet. Ask AI to show the exact calculation. If they do not match, fix the method before sharing.
Step 5
Make It Repeatable
Save the prompt with the file layout. Next month, upload the new export and run the same prompt.
