I think we are standing at a second Leduc moment. This time the resource is power, data and the know-how to run complex systems. The Alberta AI Advantage is my Alberta AI strategy blueprint for owning that future instead of renting it back.
The Alberta AI Advantage is a 27-page blueprint for how Alberta can lead in AI. It rests on four pillars. Workforce fluency, sustainable infrastructure, sovereign data and ethical guardrails.
Under all four sits one foundation, applied industry execution. That is the work of making AI pay off inside real companies, towns and associations. Without it, the pillars are only declarations.
AI runs on electricity. Alberta has the power, the land and a cold climate that helps keep machines cool.
Companies have asked to connect about 19,565 MW of new data centre load. That is more than the most power the whole province has ever used in one hour, according to the Government of Alberta.
At the same time, most businesses are still early. Statistics Canada found 21.0% of urban businesses used AI in the past year, against 9.9% of rural ones. The gap between demand for compute and use on the ground is where Alberta wins or loses.
The Second Leduc Moment is not coming. It is here.
Execution sets the return. It is the only layer that produces a number. Clarity before code. Readiness before rollout. Sequencing before spend.
Fluency sets the ceiling. Literacy is knowing what AI is. Fluency is using it inside your job to get a result. Executives, operators and builders each need something different, and rural Alberta needs it delivered through the channels it already trusts.
Infrastructure sets the scale. Power is the limit. Chips come second. Alberta’s rules put projects that bring their own new generation at the front of the line, and host communities need real standing in those deals.
Data sets who owns the outcome. Where data sits matters less than whose laws reach it. Industrial data from energy, farms and freight is a provincial asset that most companies still treat as exhaust.
Guardrails set how long it lasts. Most AI use is low risk and should move fast. High-risk uses earn independent review. Procurement is the strongest lever a province has.
